In 1998, The Foundation chose to help Deb's House - a short term stay facility for children of families in crisis. Deb's House was chosen because Abby chose it. Early in April of 1997, a couple of weeks before she died, Abby, her brother, Craig, her sister, Emily and her mother, Jan took a tour of Deb's House in Lancaster. On the tour Abby asked Jan to explain about who stays and who works there. After she found out that staff and volunteers work together to help the children, Abby said "Mommy, can I volunteer here?"

Each year, numerous nonprofit organizations apply for funds from the Foundation. The Foundation's Selection Committee - comprised of a foundation board member(s), Abby's peers, family and friends - carefully reviews each application and chooses the annual recipient(s) based on the projects proposed. The Foundation Board awards these funds at the annual Family Skate Day for Abby. The skating event is held in February or March each year and is open to the general public FREE of charge.

The Abigail L. Longenecker Memorial Foundation was formed in 1998 to remember Abby and her caring and friendly nature and to act positively on her behalf within our community. It is the desire of her family and friends to contribute to the community in ways in which we believe she would have contributed.

The foundation was formed to provide funds to local nonprofit organizations for specific projects which benefit children.
